Just behind your footstep
Just behind your footstep
just behind your footstep
the silence is most intense
with an unknown tenderness,
different from anything else.
Different from anything
you can hear or see.
The singing that follows your shoe,
the light that follows your hands.
Just behind your shoulder,
closer than you think, a peacefulness
as yet unknown to yourself
where the world is silent
for a deep and short moment
as after a silent promise
from sealed lips.
(after Rolf Jacobsen, 1907-1994, Norwegian poet)
