Ute Koninx: author, guide, traveller

From a very young age, I remember wanting to travel and discover the world. Growing up as a third culture kid, when this term was not yet coined, I also got a lot of experience in feeling lost, whenever it was time to move again; it always took time to find my way in a new place or country. Together, the early goal of wanting to explore, and those feelings of being ‘lost and found’ are very much a part of me.  Fast forward some decades - I have now lived in eight countries and four continents. I always explored, learned, researched. I guess, it was both with the aim of making sense of my experience in the new location, and finding my place in it. Ultimately, I fell in love with every country.

My love of Norway and its majestic landscapes and fjords took some time to develop, but has taken a firm hold now. I keep coming back for more adventures on foot, skis, in the kayak and on the bike. So far two books and a blog have been the result of this love affair.

‘Hiking in Norway - south’

‘Hiking in Norway - South / the 10 best multi-day treks’, by Cicerone Press, is the result of three years of hiking, research and writing. It is a unique and much-needed English-language guidebook to trekking in Norway. For a great overview on each of the wonderful treks, check out my UK Hillwalking article. Here you will find more information on the book. Be sure to check the practical pages for updates too.

co-author ‘ Hiking lysefjord and Beyond: day trips in the Stavanger region’

I co-authored ‘Hiking Lysefjord and Beyond: day trips in the Stavanger Region’ with my friend Rosslyn. It is aimed at those who might not yet have had the opportunity to do much hiking in this part of the world. It details wonderful walks and stunning hikes, and informs extensively on the ‘how to’ of hiking. Simply said, it is the book we would have liked to hold in our hands, when we first came to this amazing country. Go here for more information.
