Hiking in Norway - South / the 10 best multi-day treks

Cicerone Press

Cicerone Press

A new guidebook to the best mountain and fjord multi-day treks in Southern Norway. A region that stretches from Kristiansand in the south to Trondheim in the north, this is the home of Scandinavia’s highest peaks and glaciers, with epic ‘vertigo hikes’ that leave you breathless and awestruck. Wide, open and sometimes unforgiving spaces await you, with panoramas that will make you marvel at the geological history. Here, hiking in solitude is very much a possibility - as is arriving in the evening into one of the most hospitable environments you might ever encounter. The mountain huts and lodges/inns of the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) are strewn among some of the country’s most glorious landscapes. They are staffed, self-serviced or non-serviced, and you will come to love them for their quirkiness as much as their warmth and hospitality. This guide describes 10 multi-day treks from 3-8 days in length, covering the major national parks as well as other areas of outstanding natural beauty. From scenic but challenging crossings over mountaintops, to seemingly endless stretches over glacial moraines, or lush green alpine meadow valleys teeming with live, Norway’s diverse mountain terrain is bound to bewitch you. To trek here you need a good level of fitness, some experience in mountain hiking, and good waterproof gear. This guide offers comprehensive route and stage descriptions, including extensive information on travel infrastructure by public transport to all destinations covered.

I purchased the guide in spring for my forthcoming summer trip to Norway. It has proven to be very useful in the early stages of planning ( I used it in conjunction with Author’s website – a great site with some useful updates and suggestions) and later on in the field when hiking in Trollheimen and Dovrefjel. The guidebook meets Cicerone standards and it is simply a pleasure to read. Well written with good quality maps and diagrams. It has tons of practical suggestions (ranging from local transportation, maps, DNT membership, equipment to different types of berries and wild life you can encounter ). You could see right away that it was written by a fellow hiker who has been there. Highly recommended for any one who plans to spend some time in Norway.

Why this book?

It was a great surprise to learn that while British ‘tourists’ and mountaineers were among the first to ‘discover’ Southern Norway in the 19th century, for a long time there has been no guidebook with up-to-date, detailed information for an English-speaking audience. It has been an enriching journey to fill this gap.

It is with delight that I present this guidebook to my fellow hikers and readers. It is wonderful to be able to share the joys and challenges of the Norwegian outdoors through the treks “Hiking in Norway - South”. The drama and ever-changing character of the landscapes have captured my heart, and I am convinced they will capture yours as well! No day is ever the same, and the different seasons bestow an incredible array of light, shadow and mood to the panoramas. I find myself returning again and again into these wild landscapes that are accessible yet feel so remote and unspoiled.
